Requirement for degree of master of sciences (MS)(7/7/11)
- Prior to MS thesis defence, it is required to choose three preliminary committee members under the guidance of academic advisor(s), when MS candidate enters the 3rd academic semester.
- Students in the MS program should submit their research result to the committee members for pre-evaluation by the end of the 3rd semester. The committee members can request MS candidates to do oral presentations about their research.
- For the sufficient qualification of the master's degree, the candidate should publish at least one paper in domestic or international symposiums or in international (SCI) journals.
Requirement for Ph.D. degree
- As Ph.D. candidate enters the 6th academic semesters, it is required to choose five preliminary committee members under the guidance of academic advisor(s).
- Students in Ph.D. program (Ph.D. candidate) are required to submit their research result to the preliminary committee members for pre-evaluation by the end of 6th semester. The committee members can request MS candidates to do oral presentations about their research.
- The Ph.D. candidate should be qualified by approval of the preliminary committee evaluation 6 months before the final thesis defence.
a. Preliminary evaluation period: July for spring graduation, January for summer graduation.
b. Preliminary committee: Five members should be chosen. (1 chair, 4 members)
c. Preparations for preliminary evaluation:
(1) Oral presentation for Ph.D. research results. (20 min)
(2) Summary of Ph.D. research (2 pages)
(3) All the published or submitted papers or manuscripts in preparation for Ph.D. research.
(4) Under the recommendation from Ph.D academic advisor, the committee members, date, and time should be reported to the department.
(5) After a chair sees a list of the papers, the defence date should be decided. - The final committee for the final Ph.D. defence should include five members (1 chair, and 4 members). In particular at least three members from the preliminary committee should be included. Two members in the final committee can be chosen from outside, but at least one of them should be an expert in the field of research for Ph.D. candidate.
- When the student in the Ph.D. program calls for the final defence for Ph.D., he/she has to publish no less than 2 papers as the first author in SCI journals or a total impact factor of all published papers should be at least 5. If the academic advisor happens to be the first author, the student as the second author can be regarded as the first author.

Requirement for Ph.D. defence(3/17/05)
- The chemistry student in Ph.D. program should qualify the following conditions for Ph.D. defence :
a. For those who entered the Ph.D. program after 2005 : at least two papers at SCI level should be published and the student must be the first author in one of those papers. If the academic advisor happens to be the first author, the student as the second author can be regarded as the first author.
b. For those who entered the Ph.D program, before 2004: They should publish at least two SCI papers. There would be no restriction for the first authorship. - For the qualification for Ph.D. thesis defence, all Ph.D. students have to be pre-approved by the preliminary committee before 6 months of the final defence.

- All these rules are not applied to those who major in chemical education from the Ph.D. students in the chemistry department.

- Students who are in the MS program are supposed to submit their research result to the committee members for evaluations by the end of 3rd semesters. The committee members can request MS candidates to do oral presentations about their research.
- For the sufficient qualification of the master's degree, the candidate should publish at least one paper in domestic journals or in international (SCI) journals.
Requirement for Ph.D.degree
- As Ph.D. candidate enters the 6th academic semesters, it is required to choose five preliminary committee members under the guidance of academic advisor(s).
- Students in Ph.D. program (Ph.D. candidate) are required to submit their research result to the preliminary committee members for pre-evaluations by the end of 6th semesters. If needed, the committee can request the Ph.D. candidate to do oral presentations on his/her results.
- The Ph.D. candidate should be qualified by approval of the preliminary committee evaluations 6 months before the final thesis defence. Detailed rules of the preliminary evaluation follow the rule made in 3/17/05.
- The final committee for the final Ph.D. defence should include five members (1 chair, and 4 members). In particular at least three members from the preliminary committee should be included.
